What is linoprinting?

Linoprinting is a traditional process of printmaking, all done by hand. The design is carved into either traditional linoleum or rubber with carving tools to create a linocut block. This block is then used to individually print each artwork. Ink is rolled across the remaining uncarved surface of the block with a brayer. The paper is laid onto the block and Lou uses a baren (a very heavy glass tool with flat bottom) to apply pressure on the back and hand burnish / transfer the ink on to the paper.

What is a limited edition?

Each linoprint is individually inked and printed by hand on to 100% cotton rag paper and only a limited number are made. For the Garden Collection Lou makes 50 linoprints of each design and then signs and numbers each one, for example 10/50 is the tenth print in the edition of 50.

What ink does Lou use?

Lou uses Caligo Safe Wash relief ink. This is an oil-based ink that can be washed up with soap and water, with no need for solvents.

What paper does Lou use?

Lou uses Arches 100% cotton paper, 300gsm, acid free. It is mould made in France with a beautiful deckled edge. Lou tears her paper to size so all edges are a combination of original deckle and hand torn.

What are the framing options?

You can buy Lou’s linoprints framed in solid teak and ready to hang on your wall.

The solid teak wood is sourced regionally. Remember that as a natural material there will always be variations in colour, texture and grain. The artwork is box framed for extra depth, float mounted with a border to highlight the beautiful deckled edge of the cotton rag paper and covered with acrylic.

Final framed size is approximately 34x44cm with a wire at the back for hanging.

Please allow 3 weeks for delivery as these are made bespoke.

Should you wish to buy unframed then you can frame the artwork yourself. Ikea is always a great inexpensive option. The Garden Collection linoprints will fit in the 30x40cm frames. Alternatively a bespoke framer can help you.
